PIOJ, NEPA to address erosion of Negril beach

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, has requested that the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) collaborate in determining options to address the erosion of the Negril beach.

This was noted by Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator Ruel Reid, at a post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday.

Reid said a Negril breakwater project is being considered to accommodate direction of resources to address the issue.

“Cabinet has been advised that there continues to be discussions with the parties involved,” Reid said.

The Information Minister pointed out that Cabinet has given approval for contracts for the rehabilitation of Roper Road in St James, valued at $42.9 million; Belvedere feeder road in Westmoreland at $40.7 million; and the rehabilitation of Haddington/New Milns road in Hanover at a cost $43.9 million.

He said Cabinet has also given approval for the development of housing solutions at Harbour Head in St Thomas. This is a joint venture with West Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCON), to address challenges faced by the Caribbean Terrace 2004 storm victims.
